Last week Peter Greenaway got permission to, for one time only, stage a light production he had been working on onto Da Vinci's original Last Supper. The result was something that was really amazing. The only people in attendance were a few art critics and some Dominican monks from the Santa Maria delle Grazie. Greenaway hopes to be able to get permission from the Vatican to do something similar to Michelangelo's Last Judgement inside the Sistine Chapel.

To celebrate the birth of the nation I watched Wong Kar Wai's My Blueberry Nights, his first in English. I am a bit biased, he's one of my favorites, but I thought it was great. Often a foriegn director falters when trying to make something in English. I suppose the reason boils down to catering to another audience, taking out the essessance of a director's style in trying to make the film palatable to Americans.

This film didn't try to cater, and it was quintessential Wong Kar Wai. Which is sadly why it got so bashed by reviewers. I read many reviews where people were mad because the movie was too beautiful. Wait, what? How can something be too beautiful? How is that a bad thing? Reading other reviews only made me madder, so I stopped.

I thought it was a perfect movie for the 4th, it showed a vast swathe of the mid-west in a light I wasn't use to, it was brilliantly beautiful.

I say it's about time for something new and wrong as oppose to something old and wrong, novel lies are always better than stale ones I suppose.

I just finished Tropisms by Nathalie Sarraute and found it quite good. It is somewhere between the short-short and the prose poem. It has no point, no plot, no character. It is moderately poetic. It's oddest feature is its use of non-anteceded pronouns and non-anteceded references. They are little snap-shots in something larger, she is trying to achieve something more transient than Joyce's stream of consciousness. A very interesting experiment.

Below is the first film adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland directed by Cecil Hepworth in 1903. The print is decayed, and the deterioration adds an amazing creepiness to the silent piece. The music is Debussy's musical rendition of Mallarme's poem L'apres midi d'un faun. Recently I have been finding Vogue to be rather pedestrian (Ads for Dillards?), however it does prove its worth every so often, as is the case in the most recent issue. There is one article on James Thiérrée , who's great grandfather is Eugene O'Neill and grandfather is Charlie Chaplin, who creates theatrical circus dada pieces, which achieve visual effects that are more amazing than the things that are done with CG.
